Town of Deposit, Rural municipality in Delaware County, United States

Deposit is a town in Delaware County located where Oquaga Creek meets the West Branch of the Delaware River. The area contains several small villages and hamlets connected by local roads that run through forested and open terrain.

The town was founded in 1880 and named for lumber deposits left by workers who rafted logs down the Delaware River. Early growth depended on this forest industry, which brought activity and settlement to the area.

The area served as a publishing hub in the 1890s when the Outing Publishing Company produced magazines here. This literary presence shaped community life and attracted writers and creative people to the region.

The Southern Tier Expressway runs along the western side and provides access to nearby communities throughout the area. The best time to visit is during spring and fall when roads are clear and weather conditions are pleasant.

The Cannonsville Reservoir nearby was built to supply water to New York City and required flooding several communities in the process. This major water project permanently changed the landscape and remains a significant piece of regional infrastructure.
