Dickerson Park Zoo, Wildlife park in Springfield, Missouri, United States.
Dickerson Park Zoo is a public zoo in Springfield, Missouri, home to animals from Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, and the native Missouri region. The grounds are laid out with open-air enclosures, a central lake, and planted areas that separate the different animal sections.
The zoo opened in 1922, making it one of the earliest permanent zoos in Missouri. Federal funding through the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s allowed new enclosures to be built and the grounds to grow into a larger facility.
The zoo is named after W.P. Dickerson, a former mayor of Springfield, giving it a strong local identity. Families and school groups from the area visit regularly, and the zoo functions as a shared community space rather than just a tourist stop.
The grounds are mostly flat and easy to walk, with wide paths connecting most animal areas. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter, as weekends and school holidays draw noticeably larger crowds.
A raised platform at the giraffe area lets visitors stand at eye level with the animals, something rarely offered at a zoo of this size. The Titus Express, a small train, circles the central lake and passes by primate islands, giving a view of the grounds that you cannot get on foot.
