Rofelewand, Mountain summit in Kaunergrat, Austria
Rofelewand is a mountain in the Ötztal Alps standing at 3,353 meters and dominates the landscape between the Pitztal and Kaunertal valleys. A distinctive north ridge runs across its face, forming a notable climbing route for mountaineers.
The first recorded ascent took place on July 24, 1873, when eight mountaineers including Theodor Petersen and Alois Ennemoser summited the peak. This event marked the beginning of the mountain's role in the climbing history of the region.
The mountain stands as a testament to Austrian alpine traditions, attracting climbers who follow established routes marked according to UIAA climbing classifications.
Visitors reach the mountain from St. Leonhard im Pitztal, where the north ridge route offers the most direct path to the summit. Proper climbing gear and experience are necessary as the route includes sections of substantial difficulty.
The mountain's 530-meter prominence ranks it as the 89th most prominent peak among 5,947 summits in Tyrol.
