Alpbach, Alpine village in Tyrol, Austria
Alpbach is a mountain village in the Alpbachtal valley in Tyrol, situated at roughly 975 meters elevation in the Kitzbühel Alps. The settlement nestles in a narrow valley surrounded by steep mountain slopes that form its natural boundaries.
Copper and silver mining in the 15th century drove economic development and were operated by the Fugger family from Augsburg. This mining activity was instrumental in early settlement and the valley's growth.
The annual European Forum Alpbach draws international scholars, business leaders, and politicians to the Congress Centre for discussions. This gathering has made the settlement a recognized meeting place for intellectual exchange and dialogue.
The SkiJuwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau area offers over 110 kilometers of ski slopes with runs for different skill levels during winter months. Summer brings marked hiking trails through the valley and over higher elevations suitable for various fitness levels.
Since 1953, building rules have required new structures to follow traditional Tyrolean wooden architecture and preserve the original village character. This has given the settlement its distinctive appearance with uniform wooden facades and roof styles that have remained largely unchanged over decades.
