Hochwurzen, Mountain summit in Schladming region, Austria
The Hochwurzen is a mountain summit in the Schladming region that rises to 1,852 meters (6,076 feet). The area offers multiple ski runs in winter and a network of hiking trails during summer that suit different abilities.
The area was established as a recreation destination with the founding of the mountain hut in the early 1900s. Since then it has remained a center for winter sports and summer activities in the region.
The mountain hut at the top serves hearty regional food that reflects Alpine cooking traditions. Visitors stop by to rest and share meals with others who have climbed or ridden the gondola up.
A gondola system brings visitors quickly from the valley to the mountain station. The facility opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, with exact times varying between seasons.
One of the longest illuminated toboggan runs in the Alps winds down the mountainside and stays open late into the evening for nighttime rides. This run offers a rare chance to enjoy the mountain landscape under artificial lighting.
