Castle of Graz, Urban castle in central Graz, Austria
The Castle of Graz is an urban castle located in the heart of the city, built around a large open courtyard with several wings and multiple stories. Corner towers anchor the structure, and the interior contains a series of rooms that are now used for exhibitions and events.
The castle was begun in the 15th century as a residence and seat of administration for the Habsburgs, who made Graz one of their key centers in the region. Over the following centuries it was expanded and altered, which is why the building shows more than one architectural style today.
The courtyard serves as a gathering place for locals, hosting open-air events and concerts during warmer months. Inside, the rooms display objects connected to the daily life of Styrian nobility across several centuries.
The castle sits in the center of Graz and can be reached on foot from most of the old town without difficulty. The courtyard is open and free to enter, while a guided tour is the best way to explore the interior rooms.
Inside the castle there is a double spiral staircase from the 15th century, where two stairways wind around each other without ever meeting. Someone going up and someone going down can use it at the same time without crossing paths.
