Grossarl

The municipality stretches across 129 square kilometers within the Grossarl Valley, positioned 70 kilometers south of Salzburg at 924 meters elevation.

Mining activities during the Middle Ages led to rapid expansion of the settlement, though the area later encountered periods of plague and economic difficulties.

The municipality received its official coat of arms in 1965, featuring a green uprooted alder against a white background to represent local wood industry traditions.

The town maintains 4,500 guest beds distributed among various accommodation categories, with a high concentration of four-star hotels near the ski lifts.

Forty alpine cottages dot the surrounding landscape, earning the region recognition as the Valley of Alpine Cottages within the Austrian Alps.
