Grossarl

Grossarl is a market municipality in Pongau, situated in a valley south of Salzburg. The area extends across hilly to alpine terrain and is characterized by traditional village structures.

The region benefited from mining activities in the Middle Ages, which led to rapid development of the settlement. Later, epidemics and economic difficulties significantly challenged the local population.

The place takes its name from the valley that has been shaped by farmers and craftspeople for generations. Traditional woodworking and farming continue to define the local character and how people live here today.

The municipality offers numerous lodging options in various categories, with a high concentration of four-star hotels near the ski lifts. Visitors should know that the best time to explore is when roads and paths are well accessible throughout the season.

The area is known as the Valley of Alpine Cottages, with around 40 traditional alpine huts scattered across the landscape. These structures allow visitors to experience an authentic alpine way of life up close.
