Burgruine Liebenfels, Medieval castle ruins in Liebenfels, Austria
Burgruine Liebenfels is a medieval castle ruin on a hilltop with two large stone towers. The site preserves an early Gothic ring wall with remaining battlements and offers wide views from its elevated position.
The castle was built in the early 14th century as a fortified structure with two massive towers. It served as a military and residential fortress for centuries before eventually falling into ruin.
The two-floor Gothic chapel within the castle walls demonstrates the religious practices and architectural preferences of medieval Austrian nobility.
The climb to the ruins is possible on foot and gives direct access to the site. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable since the ground is uneven and the paths are steep.
One of the towers contains signal windows arranged distinctly on the penultimate floor. These openings suggest the presence of a heated chamber, which was uncommon in fortifications of that period.
