The Schaunberg castle ruins span 17,500 square meters across elevated terrain, featuring a pentagonal tower and remnants of Gothic architectural elements.
The castle, first mentioned in 1161, served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Schaunberg until their line ended in 1559 with Count Wolfgang II.
The castle ruins stand as a testament to Upper Austrian medieval architecture, with preserved sections including thick walls, defensive structures, and Gothic doorways.
Visitors can climb 186 steps to reach the observation platform atop the keep, offering views of the Eferding Basin, Mühlviertel, and Danube River.
A linden tree planted in 1402 within the castle grounds has grown to 25 meters in height with a trunk circumference of five and a half meters.
