Schaunberg Castle Ruins

Schaunberg Castle Ruins, Medieval castle ruins in Hartkirchen, Austria.

Schaunberg Castle Ruins is a fortified site in Hartkirchen featuring a pentagonal tower and remains of Gothic architectural elements spread across elevated terrain. The site still displays substantial wall sections and defensive structures that once protected the castle.

The castle was first recorded in 1161 as the seat of the Counts of Schaunberg, an influential regional family. The family line ended in 1559 with Count Wolfgang II, after which the castle lost its prominence.

The ruins display medieval building methods through their thick walls and Gothic doorways that remain visible today. These remains reflect how powerful families controlled their territories from this hilltop location.

A climb of around 186 steps leads to the observation platform of the keep, where you can survey the surrounding landscape. The terrain is best accessed during dry weather, as the paths on the elevated areas can be steep and challenging.

Within the castle grounds grows an old linden tree planted in 1402 that has developed into a substantial structure over the centuries. The tree is now one of the most noticeable features of the ruins and shows how long this place has preserved history.
