Schloss Neuwaldegg, Baroque château in Hernals, Vienna, Austria
Schloss Neuwaldegg is a Baroque castle with an ornate façade situated within expansive grounds at Vienna's western edge. The complex includes the main residence, manicured gardens, and pathways that wind through the property, inviting exploration of its various sections.
Count Theodor von Strattmann commissioned construction in 1697, with architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach shaping its design. The estate later became a place of cultural significance when Field Marshal Franz Moritz von Lacy took control and made it his own.
The name comes from its location near a newly cleared forest area, and today the park paths and green spaces show how visitors treat the grounds as a quiet retreat from the city. The architecture and gardens create the feeling of walking through a noble estate, even though it now belongs to the public.
The park grounds are accessible to visitors and feature broad pathways for walking and spending time outdoors. The Schwarzenbergpark, maintained as a public recreational space since 1958, makes the estate an appealing destination for those seeking a break from city life.
Field Marshal Franz Moritz von Lacy created one of the first English landscape parks within the Habsburg realm here, complete with reed cottages and his own mausoleum. These gardens with their deliberately crafted features show how 18th century patrons preferred romantic garden design.
