Ruggburg bei Eichenberg Vbg

Ruggburg is a castle ruin in Eichenberg situated on a mountain ridge at approximately 665 meters elevation, displaying remains of a central keep and surrounding fortifications. The site contains stone structures from different periods, with some walls still standing while others survive only as foundations or partial walls.

The original structure was built in the 10th century under the name Trudburg and was destroyed in 1025, with reconstruction taking place between 1040 and 1125. This period of rebuilding established the fortress as an active stronghold for the following centuries.

The castle held strategic importance for communities in the region and shaped how people organized trade and defense in the valley below. Visitors can sense this role by observing the commanding position and the remains of structures that once controlled movement through the landscape.

Exploring the ruin requires caution since sections of the structure remain unstable and can collapse without warning. Sturdy footwear is essential for navigating the uneven ground and rocky terrain safely.

A triangular artillery tower from the 15th century stands within the outer fortifications, representing one of the best-preserved structures at the site. This tower demonstrates how the castle was upgraded with newer defensive technologies in later centuries.
