Schloss Aigen, Castle and stately home in Aigen district, Salzburg, Austria
Schloss Aigen is a castle and stately home at the base of Mount Gaisberg in Salzburg, featuring a private chapel, extensive parks, and additional buildings across its grounds. The entire property displays typical features of an Austrian aristocratic residence designed to accommodate both formal and daily activities over centuries.
First recorded in 1402 as an agricultural property owned by the cathedral chapter, the castle changed hands several times before Levin von Mortaigne acquired it in 1614 and established it as a noble residence. It remained an important private holding throughout subsequent centuries, influencing the cultural landscape of the Salzburg region.
The castle reflects how religious and secular power coexisted in this region, visible in its chapel and spacious rooms that served both spiritual and aristocratic purposes. Visitors can observe how these spaces demonstrate the close ties between the church and local nobility that shaped Salzburg.
The grounds are accessible on foot with pathways through the parks that offer good views of the surrounding mountain landscape. Since the property includes a restaurant, it is wise to check beforehand which areas are open to general visitors.
The park was laid out in 1780 following English design principles and features natural waterfalls and springs that once rivaled the reputation of the nearby Bad Gastein spa town. These natural water features remain part of the visitor experience today and reflect the historical importance of this place as a wellness destination.
