Hochnissl, Mountain summit in Karwendel, Austria.
Hochnissl is a mountain summit in the Karwendel range that rises to about 2257 meters above sea level. From the top, you can see across the northern mountain slopes and the surrounding rocky peaks of the area.
The mountain has a long history of use by mountain farmers who herded animals on its slopes since the Middle Ages. These traditional farming practices shaped the landscape and continue to influence how the place looks today.
Local mountaineering clubs maintain several marked trails to the summit, continuing a century-old tradition of alpine path preservation in the region.
Marked hiking paths start from Pertisau and lead to the summit, taking roughly four hours of climbing time. Summer and autumn offer the best conditions for making this walk, as snow and steep sections can be easier to navigate then.
The rock contains fossils from when this area was covered by an ancient ocean millions of years ago. These marine remains show that the mountain was once below sea level.
