Sonnjoch, Mountain peak in Karwendel range, Austria
Sonnjoch is a peak in the Karwendel range standing at 2457 meters and located between Falzthurntal valley to the east and Eng valley to the west. Several hiking routes lead to the summit, passing through alpine meadows and across rocky terrain.
The area around Sonnjoch has long served as grazing land for herds, and today's hiking routes follow some ancient paths dating back centuries. The Große Ahornboden nearby contains maple groves that have been maintained by local communities for generations.
The mountain trails incorporate multiple check-in points where hikers can document their ascents and earn bronze, silver, or gold hiking achievement badges.
The southern route via Gramaialm is more beginner-friendly, while the northern route over Bärenlahner is more technically demanding. Plan to wear sturdy shoes and prepare for changeable weather, especially at higher elevations.
When viewed from Falzthurntal valley, this peak displays a distinctive shark fin shape that makes it immediately recognizable from the valley floor. From the summit, visitors on clear days can see both Achensee lake and the main Alpine ridge stretching across the horizon.
