Eiskogelhöhle, Natural limestone cave at 2100 meters in Werfenweng, Austria.
Eiskogelhöhle is a natural limestone cave located at around 2100 meters elevation in Werfenweng, featuring extensive underground passages that wind through the mountain. Inside, visitors encounter stalactite and stalagmite formations in spacious chambers connected by corridors of varying difficulty.
The cave was discovered in 1877 by Eduard Richter during an expedition on Eiskogel's southern slope. Subsequent explorations by the Salzburg Cave Association revealed the full extent of this underground system.
The cave received monument protection status in 1947 and remains under Salzburg's nature conservation law as a specifically protected geological formation.
The cave is reached by a two-hour hike from Dr. Heinrich Hackel Hut, with guided tours available to explore the formations safely. Visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots and be prepared for high altitude conditions.
The system contains two separate entrances known as the Western and Eastern Eduard-Richter entrances, with an internal vertical difference of approximately 420 meters. This configuration allows visitors to experience different routes through the cave network.
