Spitzerberg

Spitzerberg is a mountain in Lower Austria that rises about 300 meters and sits near the Slovak border. The area is shaped by open grasslands with several marked trails crossing through it.

This location was important for observation and defense during various conflicts in the region. After the First World War, its strategic position mattered when new borders were established.

The open hillsides here show how local farmers have shaped the land over many generations through traditional methods. You can see this living agricultural landscape as you walk through the area.

The best starting point is the town of Bad Deutsch Altenburg, which has a main trail leading up the mountain. The paths are well marked and come in different lengths, so you can choose based on your time and ability.

An airfield on the mountain offers excellent conditions for gliding flights. The special air currents and thermal lift make this a known center for the sport.
