Urfahr, Residential district north of the Danube in Linz, Austria
Urfahr is a residential neighborhood north of the Danube in Linz, comprising six statistical districts: Alt-Urfahr, Auberg, Harbachsiedlung, Hartmayrsiedlung, Heilham, and Karlhofsiedlung. These areas form a cohesive urban unit with apartment blocks, local shops, and the Lentia City Shopping Centre serving as a retail hub.
The district remained an independent municipality until 1919, when it joined Linz following the earlier incorporation of the Pöstlingberg community that same year. This merger marked a major turning point in the area's urban development.
The Ars Electronica Center shapes the cultural life of the district through exhibitions exploring digital technologies and artistic presentations. Visitors experience a blend of research and creative experiments that position the neighborhood as a hub for engaging with contemporary media and innovation.
The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, and the Lentia City provides straightforward access to shops and services for daily needs. The Danube is nearby for walking and relaxation.
After World War II, the district was under Soviet occupation from 1945 to 1955, while the southern part of the city remained under American control. This partition left traces in the city's urban history and collective memory.
