Elferkopf, Mountain summit in Allgäu Alps, Austria.
Description
Elferkopf is a mountain summit in the Allgäu Alps rising to 2,387 meters, featuring steep grassy slopes that descend toward the Gemsteltal valley. The mountain's distinctive shape is easily visible from many positions in the valley and dominates the southern views of the Kleinwalsertal mountain range.
History
Hermann von Barth reached the summit in 1869 and discovered a signal pole, indicating that people had visited the peak before this recorded ascent. This finding suggests the mountain held importance for humans well before the 19th century exploration.
Culture
The mountain's name refers to its role as a natural sundial, with the sun appearing directly behind the peak at 11 o'clock when viewed from below. This feature has shaped how people in the valley have understood and related to the mountain over time.
Practical
The ascent begins at the southern edge of Mittelberg, with parking available at Walmendingerhorn for direct trail access via the Wildental route. The path is well marked, and most visitors need around four to five hours for the round trip from this starting point.
Did you know?
The peak connects to the neighboring Liechelkopf through a ridge that requires grade II climbing skills to traverse. This linkage makes for a more technical route that only experienced mountaineers should attempt.
