Schloss Pöckstein

Schloss Pöckstein is an early classical castle in Straßburg built on a symmetrical rectangular plan with four stories. The building stands out for its temple-like columned pavilion and ornate stucco decorations covering the walls and ceilings throughout.

Construction began after an earthquake in 1767 damaged the region, prompting Bishop Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg to commission architect Johann Georg von Hagenauer in 1778. The residence was completed by 1782 as the bishop's new home.

The name Pöckstein comes from the hill on which it stands, becoming a landmark in the region. The grand rooms on the main floor still display their original decoration from the 1780s and reflect how such residences hosted formal gatherings and celebrations.

The castle offers catering facilities across multiple floors and ample garden space for outdoor events and strolls. Visitors should allow time to explore the various interior rooms and outdoor areas at a comfortable pace.

Hidden inside is a two-story chapel with elaborate stucco decorations used for weddings and religious services. This chapel displays the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as the rest of the castle's rooms.
