Gurktalbahn, Heritage railway in Gurktal, Austria
Gurktalbahn is a narrow-gauge heritage railway running through the Gurk River valley in Carinthia, Austria, connecting two regional towns via a winding track through mountainous terrain. The line passes through several modest stations and village areas, offering views of the surrounding hills and green landscape along its route.
The railway opened in 1898 as a working line built to improve transport in this mountain valley and was constructed by Stern & Hafferl company with specialized locomotives. Over the following decades, operations shifted multiple times before the line eventually became a heritage tourist railway.
The Carinthian Railway Friends Association maintains this historical transportation system, organizing steam locomotive rides during summer months to preserve regional railway traditions.
The journey is easily accessible from outside, and food and drinks are available in the buffet car during rides. It is advisable to bring warm clothing, as rides pass through open or partially open cars and the wind in the mountain valley can be cold.
Two steam locomotives power the trains along a special three-rail track section that connects to the TIAG industrial railway complex.
