Annenturm, Althofen

Annenturm is a rectangular fortified tower built from quarry stone in Althofen, representing medieval defensive architecture with its solid construction. The structure features a ground-level rectangular doorway on the north side and a vaulted entrance positioned higher on the second floor.

Built at the end of the 13th century, this tower served as a fortified outpost defending the Upper Market area of Althofen. A wooden observation platform was added in 1957, extending its use into the modern era.

The tower represents a key element in the architectural heritage of Althofen, standing among 27 protected monuments in the municipality of Carinthia.

A wooden observation platform provides visitors with an elevated vantage point to view the surrounding landscape and explore the region from above. Access to the platform is available through the tower's various entrance points.

The tower features an unusual arrangement of entrances where the vaulted upper doorway was strategically more important than the ground-level opening. This staggered placement of entrances at different heights was a common security feature in medieval defensive structures.
