Freudenauer Hafenbrücke, Road bridge in Simmering district, Austria
The Freudenauer Hafenbrücke is a road viaduct spanning roughly 352 meters across the Danube and connecting Freudenau Port with the districts of Simmering and Leopoldstadt. The structure has two lanes for vehicles and a pedestrian walkway, serving as a daily route for traffic in this part of Vienna.
An earlier structure stood at this location before being replaced in 1992 by the current modern bridge. This new construction directly linked both sides of the port and eliminated the need for detours of about 15 kilometers that were previously necessary.
The bridge links two districts shaped by working-class history and shows how residential areas connect to port operations today. Walking across it, you can see ships and cranes on both sides, revealing the economic role this crossing plays.
The bridge is easily accessible from both sides and offers wide paths for pedestrians and cyclists alongside the vehicle lanes. During busy port operations, traffic congestion can occur at certain times of day, so it is useful to account for this when planning your visit.
Before the current highway was built, this viaduct served between 1982 and the early 1990s as a popular shortcut for travelers heading to the airport. The slight detour through Freudenau was often faster than the congested main route through central Vienna.
