Winterhafenbrücke, Railway bridge across the Danube Canal in Simmering, Austria.
The Winterhafenbrücke is a single-track railway bridge that crosses the Danube Canal in Simmering, linking two separate rail lines. The structure carries freight traffic between industrial areas on both sides of the waterway.
An original bridge was built in 1880 and stood until April 1945, when German forces destroyed it during the final stages of World War II. Reconstruction began decades later, eventually restoring modern rail connections to this industrial area.
The bridge received the Brunel Award in 2011 for its contribution to railway infrastructure design and engineering excellence in Austria.
The bridge is part of an active railway route used primarily for freight traffic between industrial locations. You can view it from the surrounding banks, but stay clear of the active tracks for safety reasons.
The new bridge was completed in 2008, replacing the destroyed structure that had lain dormant for more than 60 years before the railway rebuilt this connection. The project demonstrated how essential this route is for connecting industry on both sides of the canal.
