Schloss Rannariedl, Medieval castle in Neustift im Mühlkreis, Austria

Schloss Rannariedl is a castle perched on a steep wooded hill overlooking the Danube River, situated near where the Ranna meets the river close to Engelhartszell monastery. The structure originally served as a defensive fortification to monitor river traffic and has evolved significantly through renovations over centuries.

Construction began around 1240 under the Falkensteiner family as a defensive fortification, then passed through numerous owners across the centuries. These changes in ownership reflect the site's importance during different historical periods.

The former castle chapel still displays baroque statues and paintings from the 18th century, revealing its use as a parish church between 1783 and 1953. These artworks show how the space served the spiritual life of the community.

The grounds can be viewed from the outside, and visitors should contact the castle administration at +43 7284 8155 or info@urlaub-neustift.at for details about access. The steep hillside location means comfortable footwear and preparation for the terrain are recommended.

A 16th-century courtyard features three-story arcades and a preserved cannon roundel that remains publicly accessible above the main buildings. These architectural details reveal how the site adapted to new military technology and defense strategies.
