Kleinkastell Oberranna, Roman fortification in Engelhartszell an der Donau, Austria
Kleinkastell Oberranna is a Roman fort on the Danube featuring three standing towers and sections of stone walls. The defensive structures reach heights of up to 1.6 meters (5 feet) and reveal the construction methods Romans used to fortify this river position.
The fort was built during Constantine I's reign as part of the Noric Limes frontier system. It served to monitor Danube traffic before being destroyed by fire, after which it was abandoned.
The name carries memory of Rome's river frontier and the military presence that shaped this region for centuries. Visitors today see the stone remains as a tangible link to the soldiers and engineers who once worked here.
The site is protected by a covering structure erected since 2017 that shields the ancient walls from weather. You can visit the location at Oberranna 5 and walk around the remains to view them from different angles.
Archaeological digs at the location uncovered ceramic vessels and bricks revealing Roman building techniques. The findings suggest this may be the ancient settlement of Stanacum referenced in the Antonine Itinerary, based on its position relative to other known sites.
