Schloss Steinhaus

Schloss Steinhaus is a heritage-protected building in Austria composed of three wings arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard. Arcades run along the inner perimeter of this complex.

The Pollheim family owned the castle for 400 years until selling it in 1629 to Count Weikart Katzianer due to their Protestant faith. Following a fire in 1736, reconstruction work in 1766 shaped the building into its current form.

The rooms inside display weapons and family portraits from generations of noble families. These collections tell the story of the different rulers who shaped the place over centuries.

The building stands on protected grounds and remains in private hands, so visits require prior arrangement. Plan ahead and contact the owners to arrange access.

After a devastating fire, the castle was completely renewed with modern elements such as distinctive window grilles on the ground floor added by the architects. This feature sets the reconstruction apart from older fortifications in the region.
