Schloss Waldreichs, Medieval castle in Rastenfeld, Austria.
Schloss Waldreichs is a four-story castle with an octagonal layout and a rectangular tower in its southwest corner that encloses an internal courtyard. Two late Gothic portals lead into this enclosed courtyard, which forms the center of the castle complex.
The original fortress was built in the 13th century by the Raspo family and served for defense for a long time. It was converted into a representative residential castle by 1530 and retained its massive structures.
The Chapel of John of Nepomuk stands on the remains of an earlier defensive tower and shapes the character of the place since its consecration in the 18th century. It is woven into the castle grounds and shows how religious buildings reflect the history of the site.
The grounds are located in a naturally situated setting with forest paths and a pond that can be explored on foot. The visit is best in the warmer months when the paths are dry and nature around is active.
The castle houses a center for birds of prey that allows visitors to observe these raptors in a setting close to their natural habitat. Additionally, regular forest education workshops are offered that teach knowledge about the local flora and fauna.
