Schloss Wetzlas, Classical manor house in Pölla, Austria
Schloss Wetzlas is a two-story manor house in Pölla featuring a central projection, an astronomical observation tower, and a connected chapel arranged around three sides of a courtyard. The building displays classical architectural proportions with symmetrical facades typical of its period.
Built between 1720 and 1725 by Baron Johann Philipp von Ehrmann, the manor house replaced the earlier Burg Dobra as the regional administrative seat. This transition reflected the shift from medieval fortification to Enlightenment-era representation of power.
The building complex includes an astronomical tower from the late 18th century that represents the period's scientific interests and architectural characteristics.
The manor house now operates as a youth guest house and holiday residence providing lodging for visitors to the Lower Austrian region. When visiting, check in advance which areas are accessible to the public since the property functions as a private accommodation facility.
The astronomical observation tower on the grounds was a functional instrument for private scientific study in the late 1700s, not merely decorative. Such towers were uncommon among wealthy landowners and reveal the genuine scholarly interests of the property's original owner.
