Burg Krumau, Medieval castle ruins in Krumau am Kamp, Austria
Burg Krumau is a castle ruin in the Austrian town of Krumau am Kamp, built across multiple levels. The site features two courtyards enclosed by tall walls, with access through a late medieval gate tower topped by a pyramidal roof.
Construction began in the 12th century, and the fortress passed to the Habsburgs in 1276, though it remained pledged to various holders for centuries. The 16th century brought significant rebuilding under pledgeholder Gregor Rauber.
The place name reflects the castle's position within a bend of the Kamp river, a geographic feature you notice immediately as you walk around the ruins from different angles.
The site is best explored on foot, with steep paths and stairs connecting the different levels throughout the structure. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when surfaces can be slippery.
A vaulted passage in the southeastern section links different parts of the structure together. This underground connection reveals how residents designed the layout for practical movement across the challenging terrain.
