Traun-Ursprung, Mountain spring and waterfall at Grundlsee, Austria
Traun-Ursprung is a mountain spring that emerges from a rock face below Mount Elm and flows directly into Lake Kammersee in the Salzkammergut region. The water descends in several stages, forming a natural waterfall cascade that cuts into the steep alpine terrain.
The spring has supplied water to the surrounding area since medieval times. In 1549, workers built a sluiceway connecting Lake Kammersee and Lake Toplitzsee to facilitate timber transport through the region.
The spring marks the beginning of the Traun River, which shapes the entire Salzkammergut region through its connection with multiple lakes and valleys.
Access is by boat across Lake Toplitzsee, followed by a walking path to the viewing area near Lake Kammersee. The terrain is mountainous and path conditions vary depending on the season and recent weather.
The spring flows intermittently rather than constantly, varying greatly with rainfall and season. During dry periods, the waterfalls may nearly disappear, making each visit a different experience depending on current water levels.
