Dorfkapelle Tregist

Dorfkapelle Tregist is a protected chapel in Bärnbach that features colorful wall paintings across its exterior surfaces. These depict biblical scenes and images of saints including Saint Martin and Saint Mother Teresa.

This chapel was built between 1986 and 1989 on the site of an earlier sanctuary from 1884. That structure had been destroyed by flooding in the 1950s.

The chapel takes its name from the nearby Tregist stream that once shaped this area. The painted exterior walls display religious scenes that invite visitors and locals to pause and reflect.

The chapel stands at about 470 meters in elevation near Tregist Creek and welcomes visitors year-round for exterior viewing. Access is straightforward, making it easy to stop by during any season without special requirements.

The main altar holds an image of Mary Untier of Knots, created by artist Franz Weiss in response to the Chernobyl disaster. This emotional link between a personal artwork and a world-changing event makes the place deeply moving.
