Radetzky-Denkmal, Bronze military monument at Stubenring, Vienna, Austria
The Radetzky Monument is a bronze equestrian statue on a red marble base at Stubenring in Vienna. The sculpture shows Field Marshal Radetzky mounted on his horse and surrounded by reliefs depicting military scenes.
The monument was unveiled in 1892 by sculptor Kaspar von Zumbusch at Am Hof square before being moved within two decades. In 1912 it was relocated to its current position at Stubenring.
The reliefs on the base show Radetzky in military council with his generals and receiving praise from soldiers of different units. These scenes reflect how 19th-century Austrians honored their military leadership.
The monument stands right near Stubentor where the U3 metro line and several tram routes stop. You can reach it easily from the city center with convenient connections to other attractions.
At the 1892 unveiling, the famous Radetzky March by Johann Strauss I was performed while Emperor Franz Joseph attended the ceremony. This link between the musical masterpiece and this monument makes it a distinctive spot in Vienna's past.
