Muckenkogel, Mountain summit in Lilienfeld, Austria
Muckenkogel is a mountain summit in the Gutensteiner Alps in Lower Austria, located just above the town of Lilienfeld. From the top, the view stretches across the Traisen Valley and the surrounding ridges.
The summit has served as a natural landmark for the region for centuries, while the Cistercian abbey of Lilienfeld was established in the valley below during the 13th century. Ski infrastructure was added in the 20th century, opening the peak to a wider public.
The mountain is the local hill for Lilienfeld residents, drawing families, hikers, and skiers from the area on weekends throughout the year. In winter it becomes a ski area that locals associate with first turns on snow and early lessons.
The summit can be reached by chairlift from Lilienfeld or on foot via several trails of varying difficulty. A mountain restaurant at the top station offers food and drinks after the ride or hike up.
At the top station there is a swing set up to face the open valley, something rarely found at mountain summits. Sitting on it gives the feeling of hanging in mid-air above the landscape below.
