Feld- und Industriebahnmuseum Freiland, Railway museum in Freiland, Austria.
The Feld- und Industriebahnmuseum Freiland is a railway museum on the grounds of a former paper factory, displaying around 50 locomotives and 180 railway cars. Most of the vehicles have a 600 millimeter gauge and are spread across the expansive outdoor grounds.
The museum was founded in 1965 in Vienna and relocated to Freiland in 1983, taking over the grounds of a defunct paper factory. The move allowed it to house its expanding collection of narrow-gauge railways in a new location.
The museum displays vehicles from diverse industrial sectors like forest and peat railways, offering insight into specialized working worlds of the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection documents how narrow-gauge railways handled everyday tasks across various industries.
The museum opens on specific days throughout the year and offers rides on a 500 meter demonstration track with operating vehicles. Visitors should check ahead to learn which days are available for visits and whether ride opportunities are scheduled.
The grounds display different track configurations with turntables and three-rail tracks, demonstrating various construction methods of narrow-gauge railways from the 19th century. These technical variations are rare examples of the diversity of historical rail systems.
