Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus Tannheim, Baroque church in Tannheim, Austria
Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus is a baroque church in Tannheim featuring a distinctive tower topped with an onion dome that rises to about 47 meters. The interior contains three stucco marble altars and ceiling frescoes in vivid colors, along with artworks depicting The Last Supper and The Last Judgment.
An earlier church at this site was first recorded in 1377, but was eventually rebuilt with a new structure. The present building was constructed between 1722 and 1724 by master builder Andreas Hafenegger and was later consecrated by Augsburg Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob von Mayr.
The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and serves as a gathering place for the local community during major religious celebrations and feast days. Its interior decorations tell stories of saints and biblical events through paintings and colored glass that guide visitors through spiritual themes.
The church is open for visitors to explore the interior spaces at their own pace and observe the architectural details. It is best to spend time slowly walking through the nave to fully appreciate the altars, ceiling frescoes, and artworks without rushing.
The bell tower houses a fully preserved bell ensemble from the Löffler foundry, including a weather bell from the 16th century that still rings on special occasions. This rare collection of bells spanning different periods is still in working condition today.
