Béguinage of Hoogstraten, Medieval religious community in Hoogstraten, Belgium
The Béguinage of Hoogstraten is a religious community of residential buildings arranged around a central courtyard. These structures display traditional Belgian brick architecture and are enclosed by stone walls from 1534 that separate the space from the surrounding area.
The site was founded in 1380 to provide shelter for women without significant means. It reached its peak in the 17th century when it housed a substantial population living in independent religious communities.
The name comes from the Beguines, religious women who lived here in community from the 14th century without taking formal vows. The courtyard is still used much as it was then, showing how these women organized their daily lives between prayer and practical work.
Visitors can explore the grounds on foot and view the architecture and courtyard up close. Most areas are freely accessible, allowing you to move easily between buildings and discover the spaces at your own pace.
The last resident departed in 1972, after which a restoration project in 1999 converted the site into housing. The grounds maintained their historical character while preserving the spatial arrangement of former daily life.
