Gelmelslot, Medieval castle in Hoogstraten, Belgium
The stone fortress stands along the Mark River, featuring remaining outer court structures and a preserved moat surrounding the complex.
Initially built in the 9th century as a wooden keep, the castle underwent Gothic renovations in the 15th century under Jan IV van Kuik's direction.
The castle welcomed notable visitors including Maximilian of Austria, Maria of Burgundy, Philip the Fair, and Charles V during regional diplomatic meetings.
While the interior remains closed to public access, visitors can explore the castle grounds through a 6-kilometer digital heritage walking trail.
Since 1931, the castle functions as a Penitentiary School Center, providing vocational training programs within its historical walls.
