Gelmelslot

Gelmelslot is a stone castle situated along the Mark River in Hoogstraten, featuring remnants of outer court buildings and a preserved moat that still surrounds the complex. The castle grounds are accessible to explore, though the interior remains closed to visitors.

The castle began as a wooden fortification in the 9th century before being rebuilt in stone. During the 15th century, it received Gothic renovations that shaped its current form.

The castle hosted notable European rulers including Maximilian of Austria and Charles V for regional diplomatic meetings. These visits show how important the location was for political affairs in the area.

You can walk freely around the castle grounds and explore the outdoor areas on your own. A digital heritage walking trail system provides additional information for visitors who want to learn more about the site and its history.

Since 1931, the castle has housed a Penitentiary School Center that runs vocational training programs within its ancient walls. This unusual use has protected the site from decay while giving it a contemporary purpose.
