St. Veroon March

St. Veroon March, Military parade in Halle and Tubize, Belgium

The St. Veroon March is a military procession that travels roughly 18 kilometers through the region and includes around 500 participants wearing historical uniforms. The route passes through several towns and displays equipment and costumes from different military periods.

The procession traces its roots to the 15th century and honors Saint Veroon, who according to tradition was descended from Charlemagne and lived as a farm worker in Lembeek until 863. This ancient commemoration has evolved into an annual gathering that the region maintains to this day.

The groups marching in the parade represent different periods of Belgian military history through their uniforms and equipment. This procession has become a way for the region to remember its connection to these historical military traditions.

The event begins early in the morning at the old town hall in Lembeek, where participants gather to receive banners and medals before setting off. The route follows a day-long path through neighboring towns with several stops, allowing onlookers to position themselves along different sections of the way.

At several chapels along the route, which crosses the linguistic border between Flemish and Walloon regions, pilgrims receive traditional gifts including gin, meat, and Easter eggs. This practice of sharing food and drink at sacred stops has become a memorable part of the experience.
