Tubize, city in Wallonia, Belgium
Tubize is a small city in the Walloon region of Belgium situated within the Nivelles arrondissement. It spreads across gently rolling terrain along the Senne River valley, displaying a mix of older stone buildings, remnants of industrial structures, and newer residential areas that reflect both its past and present character.
Tubize developed from a medieval village centered around a church dedicated to Saint Reineldis into a major industrial hub during the 19th century. The construction of canals, railways, and factories such as the Forges de Clabecq transformed it into a regional manufacturing powerhouse that employed thousands of workers.
Tubize maintains strong community ties rooted in its industrial past. Local events and gatherings still bring neighbors together, and many residents take pride in preserving memories of the railway and factory heritage through informal celebrations and neighborhood traditions.
Tubize has an active train station offering connections to Brussels in about 25 minutes and other major cities, making train travel convenient for visitors. The town is also accessible via the E19 highway and offers regular bus services plus flat walking and cycling paths along the Senne River and through parks.
Tubize was famous for its locomotive factory Les Ateliers de Tubize that built train engines from the 19th century onward, with some still visible today in countries like Finland, Greece, Poland, and Iran. These railway artifacts connect the modest Belgian city to train networks across the globe.
