Chapelle Notre-Dame de Heigne

Chapelle Notre-Dame de Heigne, Religious chapel in Jumet, Belgium.

Chapelle Notre-Dame de Heigne is a chapel in Charleroi that combines Romanesque and Gothic building elements spread across six bays with alternating pillars and columns. The interior space is defined by these alternating supports that create a rhythmic structure.

This chapel dates from the 12th century and once belonged to a priory under Lobbes Abbey. A fire in the late 15th century led to its reconstruction and the enlargement of its facade in the early 13th century.

The chapel holds a 1510 statue of the Virgin with Child, showing medieval religious art that people have venerated here for centuries. This work reflects how faith was expressed through sculpture during that era.

The chapel is located in Jumet, a district of Charleroi, and has been registered as a protected monument since 1941. When visiting, remember this is a historic building that should be entered with respect and care.

The chapel features a flat-chevet choir, an unusual choice in traditional church architecture. This feature sets it apart from many other religious buildings of the same period and region.
