Spa funicular

The Spa funicular is a cable-driven system with two carriages that moves passengers along inclined tracks from the city center up to Colline d'Annette et Lubin. The journey is brief but covers significant elevation gain while revealing views across the surrounding Ardennes hills.

The system was built in the late 1800s to help visitors reach the healing springs and spa facilities that made the town famous. Its construction reflected the rapid growth of the resort during that period.

The funicular is part of how visitors experience the town, connecting the lower center to wellness and relaxation areas higher up. People use it daily as an ordinary way to move between different parts of the spa resort.

The ride is brief, but wear sturdy shoes since the slopes are steep and the paths at the top can be narrow. Visit during daylight hours when you can fully enjoy the views and gauge the elevation changes safely.

The system uses a counterweight mechanism where the two carriages act as weights for each other, balancing out as they move up and down. This design allows the railway to operate efficiently throughout the day with minimal energy use.
