Commissioned in 1885 by Eugène Goblet d'Alviella, the mausoleum was designed by Belgian architect Adolphe Samyn and received heritage status in 1988.

The structure incorporates elements from multiple religious traditions and features philosophical inscriptions that reflect the liberal thinking of its commissioner.
