SciELO, Digital library and bibliographic database in São Paulo, Brazil
SciELO is a digital library and bibliographic database based in São Paulo that offers open access to Latin American scientific publications. The system holds a large collection of research articles and academic journals available in multiple digital formats including XML and HTML.
The platform was established in 1997 by the São Paulo Research Foundation and BIREME to improve scientific communication in Latin American developing countries. It arose from the need to make research findings from this region accessible to a wider community.
The platform allows researchers worldwide to access work from Brazilian and Latin American scholars, democratizing how scientific knowledge spreads beyond geographical limits. This has opened southern hemisphere research to international communities who might otherwise never encounter these contributions.
Users can search collections by country, subject area, publisher, or journal title and find articles in various digital formats. The site provides navigation and filtering options that make it straightforward to find specific scientific content.
The network spans 16 countries including Argentina, Chile, and Mexico, making it the largest open-access scientific database in Latin America. This continental reach demonstrates how initiatives that start locally can grow into major scientific infrastructure for the region.
