Getafe is a municipality in the Madrid metropolitan area in Spain, located south of the capital. The city spreads across flat terrain and sits at an elevation of 622 meters (2041 feet).
Several settlements merged here in 1326 along the royal road between Madrid and Toledo. The place name comes from the Arabic word jata and refers back to the period of Moorish rule.
The cathedral carries traces of local craftsmanship from the 16th century and combines a sober style with religious function. Visitors notice the clear lines and restrained design typical of that period.
The city lies about 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of central Madrid and is reachable via the road to Toledo. Flat terrain makes it easier to move around on foot in the central areas.
The Cerro de los Ángeles marks the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula and carries a Sacred Heart monument from 1924. The hill offers an overview of the flat landscape all around.
