Vizcaya Bridge, Suspension bridge in Portugalete, Spain.
Vizcaya Bridge connects Portugalete and Getxo across the Nervion estuary using a transporter system where a suspended gondola moves beneath a steel framework. The structure sits on four towers that support a horizontal beam, allowing river traffic to pass freely underneath.
Alberto Palacio designed the bridge between 1890 and 1893 after earlier tower projects failed to move forward. His solution allowed ferry operations to continue while permitting large vessels to navigate the estuary.
The structure takes its name from the river crossing it provides, and local residents still use it daily to travel between neighborhoods. It serves as a practical link that brings communities together.
The gondola crossing takes about a minute and runs frequently throughout the day. Visitors can also access an upper walkway to enjoy views from above, though weather conditions may affect operating hours.
The steel framework displays engineering details from the era of its creation, including forged decorative elements on the towers. Visitors often overlook the hand-crafted connection details and anchor points that showcase industrial craftsmanship.
