La Monumental, Historical bullring in Fort Pienc, Barcelona, Spain
La Monumental is a former bullring in the Fort Pienc neighborhood of Barcelona, built with brick in a neo-Mudéjar style that mixes Moorish and Byzantine design elements. Across the entire facade, colorful ceramic tiles form geometric patterns that blend regional building traditions with Eastern influences.
The arena opened in 1914 under the name Plaza de El Sport and received its current title two years later. Architect Manuel Raspall led the expansion and shaped the final design of the complex following regional models.
The bullfighting museum inside gathers garments and tools from several centuries of arena tradition across the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors today can examine the embroidered suits up close and trace how the craft evolved through generations of performers.
The address at Gran Via 749 sits directly on the main thoroughfare of the same name and connects via Metro Line 2 at Monumental station. An entrance to the museum opens during regular hours for those who wish to explore the interior space.
No bullfights have taken place here since 2012, after Catalonia became the first mainland region in Spain to introduce such a ban. The final event of this kind in 2011 drew thousands of spectators and marked the end of a centuries-old tradition in the city.
