Casa Planells

Casa Planells is a residential building in Modernist style at the corner of Diagonal Avenue and Sicilia Street in the Eixample neighborhood. The facade features curved forms and plant-inspired ornaments that wrap around multiple dwelling units and maximize the corner site.

Architect Josep Maria Jujol designed the building between 1923 and 1924 during the final phase of the Catalan Modernist movement. This period marked a transition toward new directions in Catalan architecture.

The name references an early owner, and the facade displays characteristic features of the Modernisme movement in Catalonia. Visitors can observe the curved lines and organic forms that exemplified popular design principles of that era.

The building sits at Diagonal Avenue 332 and is easily reached from Verdaguer metro station, where lines 4 and 5 of Barcelona's metro system connect. Its corner location along a major avenue makes it straightforward to locate and access.

The building solves the tricky challenge of a corner location with curved facades that make maximum use of every bit of space. Jujol created a dwelling that avoids the typical rectangular appearance and flows naturally into the street.
