Coves de Campanet, Cave system in Campanet, Spain.
Coves de Campanet is a cave system extending over 1 kilometer underground, featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and natural rock formations throughout its passages. The chambers vary in size and shape, with smooth limestone walls and small underground pools visible in several areas.
Local resident Miquel Cañellas discovered the caves in 1945 while searching for water, leading to their later opening for public access. This discovery transformed the hidden system into a recognized location and prompted systematic exploration of its passages.
The chambers carry names like the Romantic Room, Lake Room, and Enchanted Castle, reflecting how visitors and guides have connected the underground landscape to familiar spaces. This naming tradition shows how local people made sense of the hidden world beneath their feet.
The interior stays cool at around 18 degrees Celsius year-round, making it comfortable to walk through regardless of outside weather. Guided tours are available in multiple languages, and the pathways through the chambers are prepared for visitors.
Fossil remains of Myotragus balearicus, an extinct small goat-like animal that lived on the island until around 5,000 years ago, were discovered within the cave. These bones help scientists understand how animal life changed on Mallorca over thousands of years.
