Alcañiz, Medieval municipality in Lower Aragon, Spain

Alcañiz is a municipality in Teruel Province within the Aragon region, spreading along the Guadalope River at roughly 340 meters elevation. A medieval castle rises on Pui-Pinos hill and overlooks the cobbled streets and sandstone buildings of the old quarter.

King Alfonso II of Aragon handed control of the settlement to the Calatrava military order in 1179, who used the hilltop castle as their command center. This military and religious legacy shaped the development of the town throughout the medieval period and into the early modern era.

The Guadalope River flows through the old quarter and has shaped daily life for centuries. The Renaissance Lonja now serves as an exhibition space, showing how medieval trading structures have transformed into modern cultural venues.

The Motorland Aragon circuit lies nearby and receives motorsport events, testing sessions, and driver training throughout the year. The track is well signposted and easy to reach from the main roads.

Val del Charco del Agua Amarga preserves prehistoric rock paintings that form part of the UNESCO World Heritage site for Mediterranean Basin rock art. These images lie just outside the town center and depict early human scenes of hunting and daily life.
