Aitxuri

Aitxuri is a limestone peak in the Aizkorri mountain range that rises to 1,508 meters (4,948 feet). Steep cliffs and rocky formations shape its slopes and create a distinctive vertical landscape.

The mountain served as a natural boundary between regions for centuries, shaping how local communities and traders moved through the area. This border position left a lasting mark on settlement patterns and regional connections in the Basque Country.

Shepherds have long used the mountain slopes for herding, maintaining customs deeply rooted in Basque life and heritage. Visitors walking the paths may encounter people still practicing this traditional way of working with livestock.

Multiple trails depart from Zegama and lead to the summit, with the northern path through beech forests being the most direct option. These routes are generally walkable but require proper footwear and basic mountain navigation skills.

Beneath the mountain's surface lies a network of caves and underground water channels carved through the limestone structure. This hidden geological world fascinates specialists but remains invisible to those walking the upper trails.
